Leading the Charge on Literacy

At KLC School Partnerships, we realize that kids sometimes need fun projects and incentives to boost reading interest. We consistently provide this critical fun element in our Read*Write*Now! literacy programs nationwide.

A Focus on Supporting Schools' Literacy Goals As part of our Read*Write*Now! literacy initiative, our programs work creatively to keep kids reading. The program arose out of the U.S. Department of Education, school district, and local communities' strong focus on developing a love of reading at an early age; and it's been in full swing at all our sites for several years. We design each program to address district literacy goals.

Motivating Children to Read and Write

In addition to weaving a literacy emphasis into the entire before and after school environment, KLC School Partnerships sets aside at least 30 minutes of the enrichment day for a literacy activity such as reading, writing, or vocabulary building.

The Read*Write*Now! initiative helps children and schools achieve and exceed reading and writing performance goals. All of KLC School Partnerships before and after school, preschool, and kindergarten sites participate in this national literacy campaign. Logically enough, a voracious appetite for reading correlates with development of solid reading and writing abilities.

READ*WRITE*NOW! Highlights

• CHAMPIONS BookClub—All KLC School Partnerships sites receive a children's literature book each month, supplemented by an activity guide that contains a variety of book-related projects. KLC's education team selects the books for their ability to reinforce specific learning themes. Our teaching staff reads the books aloud to children and receives guidelines on how to maximize the effectiveness of reading aloud.
• Book fairs, book drives, reading buddies, guest readers, etc.
• Encouragement to sign up and use a library card
• Book discussions and development of book reviews
• Contests and prizes, both individual and collective, for reading accomplishment
• Journaling
• Pen pal program among KLC School Partnerships sites across the nation
